Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Jamie Redknapp, both former Premier League players, disagree with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly regarding the sacking of manager Graham Potter.
After Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Leicester City over the weekend in a Premier League match, which was their third in a row, Potter, 47, has seen his hefty sack claims diminish in the last few days.
Potter was in danger of losing his job at Chelsea in March after just one win in 2024. However, victories against Leeds United, Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, and Leicester have significantly eased the pressure.
Many people thought that Chelsea’s game against Leeds United was important, and when Hasselbaink and Redknapp talked about Potter’s job security, they got into a heated argument about how important the game against Javi Gracia’s team was.
Talking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: ” I would go so far as to say that I believe Potter would have lost his job if they had lost to Leeds.
“I do. That just goes to show how quickly things can change, though I believe that was the case.
Hasselbaink reacted to Redknapp by stating, ” I think the proprietors have an undertaking and he [Potter] is a major piece of that venture.”
Redknapp then elaborated on his initial point, saying, Not so sure, I think. I’m not saying they don’t have a plan, but I think there is a certain amount of pressure when a manager takes over, and I think if they had lost that game against Leeds United, that would have been the end of it for him. Since then, the three games have been so important.
Hasselbaink then made an excellent argument regarding the change in ownership: It might have been months before with the other owner, Roman Abramovich, but I don’t think with these owners. They have faith in Potter and want this to last a long time.
