Academic Calendars 2022/23
Most courses are structured in line with one of four different Academic Calendars. This simply means that similar types of course share the same key dates, e.g. welcome and induction, teaching weeks, holidays and end-of-module examinations/assessments periods.
The Academic Calendar for your course depends on a number of factors, including whether you are Undergraduate or Postgraduate, if your course includes placements, whether you are an Apprentice and so on.
If you’re a current student, you’ll find your Academic Calendar listed in MyRecord under ‘Your course details’ or if you’re still unsure please contact your Course Team.

Which calendar is which?
From 2022/23, the University’s four Academic Calendars are:
- SEMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as SEM (15WK)): Most Undergraduate courses follow the University’s ‘Semesters’ Calendar. For each year of study, learning and teaching is delivered in two blocks of 15 weeks; this includes 12 weeks of learning & teaching, one study week, and two weeks for end-of-Semester assessments/examinations.
- SEMESTERS WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING BLOCK (referred to in MyRecord as SEM (15WK PLB) ): This Calendar is typically used for courses that have a longer academic year to meet external professional requirements. These are primarily courses in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care, and those in the School of Teacher Education. Each year of study is divided into two blocks of 15 weeks (made up of 12 weeks of learning & teaching, one study week, and a two-week period for formal assessments/examinations) followed by a further five weeks for the completion of any outstanding placement activity.
- TRIMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as TRIMSTR (15WK)): Typically used for Postgraduate Taught Degrees. Each year of study on this Academic Calendar is is divided into three blocks of 15 weeks comprising 12 weeks of learning & teaching, one study week and a two-week period of formal assessments/examinations.
- 12-WEEK TRIMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as either 12WK (EQUAL) or 12WK (LONG)): This Calendar is for Undergraduate courses which are taught in Trimesters and students progress from one academic year to the next. It is also the Academic Calendar for employment-based courses, i.e. foundation degrees and apprenticeships, where students typically attend one day a week. Courses on this Academic Calendar are delivered in three blocks of 12 weeks, made up of 11 weeks of learning & teaching and one week for end-of-Trimester assessments/examinations.
Most courses in 2022/23 will be aligned to one of these four Academic Calendars, although there will be some exceptions.
Outgoing calendars
Some course which are already underway will continue to be delivered in line with Academic Calendars which are no longer used for new courses. Your Course team will advise you if this is applicable to your course.
Welcome and inductionÂ
This week, often known as ‘Welcome Week’, is for all students starting or progressing to a new course of study. It will familiarise you with the University and help you get to know students and tutors on your course. You’ll discover different ways we support you and the opportunities to join the wider community through activities like the Students’ Union Freshers’ Fayre.
Academic Development Week
This is a week dedicated to you advancing your learning through focussed activities. You’ll also have time to prepare for assignments and develop your academic skills. This is a vital opportunity for you to reflect on your academic progress with your personal academic tutor and get advice on the next steps you need to take to achieve your full potential. It’s also a chance for you to access wider development opportunities such as volunteering and peer mentoring
