Computer Science Professional Bodies in Nigeria

The following are the computer science professional bodies in Nigeria;

1. Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria.
2. Nigeria Computer Society.
3. Information Technology Association of Nigeria.

Nigeria Computer Society (NCS)

Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is one of the Computer professional forms in Nigeria. It is the sunshade for all computer experts in Nigeria, it was founded in 1978 by the Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN). In 2000, it turns out to be Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) as a result of an organization with numerous investors and interested groups.

Individual Membership Requirements

1. Register the online application form, add all the required documents and submit with payment of N4,000.00.
2. After filling the form properly, you will receive an e-mail for admission and advice to make payment. Registration Fee differs from Membership Categories which is determined by qualifications and working experience.

3.After admission, log in to your profile and make the required payment.

4. On receipt payment, the Secretariat gives you the Membership Number and notice of the Induction.
5. You will be given a Membership Certificate at an Induction Ceremony.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:

• The completed application form, all together with appropriate supportive documents is submitted to the Secretariat.
• The application form is removed by the Secretariat with a letter.
•  Suitable processing of the form then begins.
• Successful applicants are invited for induction.
• Registered members are required to pay the annual license fee to renew the practitioner’s license.

How to be a member of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS)

Membership Categories & Requirements

Membership is open to; Information Technology Professionals, Practitioners.

 Member

• People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with five years of professional experience in IT.
• People with M.Sc./M.Tech in Computer Science and Information Technology with three years of professional experience.
• People with B.SC./HND with Computer Science and Information Technology with three years of professional experience.
• Must pass the Computer Professionals Examination.

Associate Member

• • People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with five years of professional experience.
  • People with MSc in Computer Science and Information Technology with two years of professional experience.
  • People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with two years of professional experience.
  • Must pass the Computer Professional Examination.

Graduate Member

• People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science/Information Technology with three years of professional experience.

Technologist

• National Diploma
• Computer Professional Examinations
• Certification examinations

Nigerian Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS)

Nigerian Association of Computer Science Students [NACOSS] is the authority body which covers all scholars learning computer science and other computer-related subjects in institution of higher education, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide. Furthermore, NACOSS is the scholar body of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), and it has numerous registered local stages operational in institutions located in all the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.

Individual Membership Requirements

1. A member who has served in NYSC, will join ERP (Executive Registration Programme) and be eligible for Full membership.

Note: ERP costs N80,000.
2. A member who has served in NYSC will join ERP and will be qualified for Associate membership. Write of CPE 3 exam will be admitted for Full membership. CPE 3 exam costs N96. 200.00, Exam form is N2, 000.00.Total=N98, 200.00

Membership Categories & Requirements

Membership is open to; Information Technology Professionals, Practitioners.

Member

• People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with at least five years of professional experience in IT.
• People with M.Sc./M.Tech in Computer Science and Information Technology with at least three years of experience.
• People with B.SC./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with three years experience.
• Must pass the Computer Professionals Examination.

Associate Member

• • People with B.Sc./HND in Computer Science and Information Technology with five years’ experience.

Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)

At first, it is an association of Information Technology firms and organizations involved in the practice, request, and teaching of Information Technology in Nigeria. 2009, ITAN had over 350 Information Technology focused companies in its membership.

ITAN came into existence in 1991 to encourage IT learning and dispersion into Nigeria, and to encourage members interest in the area of trade design of public policy, and to promote dialogs with the government on IT policies and matters

The Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria

Functions of Institute Software Specialists of Nigeria

1. Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria Encourages Software Technology and Research.
2. Encourages and Provide Provisions to the Nigerian Trade Interest and Exportation.
3. Encourages Studies in a Broad Understanding of Computing Language.
4. Cooperates with United Nations and Related Agencies for Attracting Software Research.
5. Inspires Educators to Develop Innovating Techniques in Training Program.

Professional bodies in Nigeria and their functions

Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria (ICEN):

The ICEN is the specialized controlling body for all economists in Nigeria. It is concerned with the teaching and guideline of the training of the occupation among economists. The institution was made to stimulate and encourage the study and progress of art and science of economics in all areas and to include experience in the economics profession, to also control the activities of its members, to be able to form a common front of advising to the government on the best strategies to approve for the nation.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria(ICAN):

ICAN is the body that is in charge of the guideline of the accounting practice in Nigeria. They train and register all successful members who pass their exams and are then familiarized as chartered accountants. It is a very costly process but it is worth it after record-keeping because there are few companies that will hire an accountant that is not chartered.

Nigerian Computer Society (NCS):

The NCS is the top body in charge of all information and technology professionals in the country. They look after training, perfections of the practice and work morals of its professionals, and proposing professionals in the field.

Nigerian Society of Engineers:

This is a body recognized by numerous engineering professionals in Nigeria. It is a body that houses all the engineer’s courses in Nigeria.

Council of the Instruction of Engineering in Nigeria:

This is the body recognized by the Federal Government with a decree which has engaged the act into law. The COREN is authorized to regulate and control the training of engineers and the practice of engineering in Nigeria.

Chartered Institute of Private Management of Nigeria (CIPM):

This body was established to house all the experts of Personnel Management in Nigeria. Their purpose is to Promote excellence in the profession and also regulate the working morals of its professionals to train its followers on how to supply value in their jobs.

National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives(NANNM):

The association was formed in 1938 and listed in1943. It is a qualified trade union body for nurses and midwives. It was recognized to bring together and establish all nurses and midwives in the country, as far as you have been given the licensed to practice the profession.

Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM):

The NIM is in charge of training and regulating the practice of management professionals in the country.

Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors:

NIQS is a controlling body for all Quantity surveyors in Nigeria. It was established by some quantity surveyors who trained and practiced in Nigeria and then go back to the USA to form a similar body with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors of the United Kingdom.
