Project description:

Since the early seminal work of mathematical physicist Giorgio Parisi, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024, and the revolutionary work of Sir Martin Hairer, who won the Fields Medal in 2014, Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs) have become a very active research field with a lot of challenging and cutting-edge research topics and different applications to problems in the real world. With a focus on stochastic heat equations, stochastic conservation laws, and stochastic Burgers/KPZ equations, this project will investigate the qualitative and quantitative properties of stochastic partial differential equations driven by Brownian motion and/or fractional Brownian motion, alpha-stable processes, and point processes (Poisson and beyond). Probabilistic, analytical, and computational techniques make up the approach. A student with a moderate understanding of partial differential equations and a solid foundation in probability theory, functional analysis, or numerical analysis is ideal for this project. The student who is working on this project would first be taught skills from a variety of fields: stochastic calculus, stochastic processes and random fields, computational and statistical techniques with simulations, and a few topics related to partial differential equations. If interested, they would then develop the well-pawedness of the relevant stochastic equations and numerical schemes.
