SANU, NASU begin nationwide strike today
nationwide strike- SANU, NASU the nationwide strike takes effect from 12 midnight, 5 February 2021, pending any contrary resolution by the branches.
The authority of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the non-teaching staff unions of universities says it will begin its nationwide strike today February 5.
This is to compel the Federal Government to meet their demands
The JAC, non-teaching staff are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of the Universities (NASU).
The NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, said this in a statement jointly signed by SSANU president Mohammed Ibrahim, on Thursday, in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the JAC of the two unions NASU and SSANU had last week threatened to embark on strike a strike action starting from February 5, to drive home its demands.
The demands are, rectifying inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS), non-payment of arrears of minimum wage, delay in renegotiation with government, NASU, and SSANU 2009 agreement, and others.
It would also be recalled that Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, and other officials, had met at a meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, to address most of the unions’ demands.
NAN also reports that a joint committee was set up to address complaints by the union and they were given 48 hours, to communicate a new date for the next meeting.
The outcome of the meeting
According to NASU General Secretary Mr. Adeyemi, in view of the outcome of the meeting, the leadership of the JAC of NASU and SSANU at the state level had been directed to have a joint general meeting on Friday, February 5.
