Academic Year

The academic year at German universities begins on October 1 of a given year and ends on September 30 of the following year. It is divided into two semesters. Within each semester, the lecture and examination periods are scheduled, followed by a lecture free period. Current and future examination and lecture periods of TUM Informatics are made available on our departmental website about exams. You can view the specific dates when lectures start and end and view holiday dates of current and future semesters on the TUM central website.

Semester division

In Germany, the academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters, that contain the lecture and examination periods.

  • The winter semester begins on October 1st and ends on March 31st.
  • The summer semester begins on April 1st and ends on September 30th.

Before lectures start, TUM Informatics hosts welcoming and orientation events. During the time between the end of classes and the start of classes in the following semester, called lecture-free period, students have a few weeks to work on longer assignments and complete any necessary examinations.

Lecture Period

  • In the winter semester lectures take place from approximately mid-October to mid-February.
  • In the summer semester, lectures are from mid-April to mid-July.

Courses and examinations may take place on Saturday, as necessary. Check the time periods on our departmental website about exams.

Examination Period

  • End term exams at the Department of Informatics normally start around the end of the lecture period until the third week of the lecture-free period at the latest.
  • Retake exams (taken by students who fail the first time) are usually held either in the last three weeks of the lecture-free period or in the first week of the following semester.

Be aware that these timescales apply to the Department of Informatics only. Other TUM Departments may have different examination periods. More information and current dates are given at our webpage about exams.
