Insulation in buildings is essential for combating climate change and achieving decarbonization. The first, as we need to keep heat inside buildings in colder climates to save energy, and the second, as we need to keep heat outside in warmer climates to use less air conditioning. Additionally, tragedies involving fires emphasize the significance of using fire-resistant cladding materials.
This iCASE PhD is working with Tata Steel Building Systems UK to create lightweight, highly insulating, and low-combustible materials for sandwich panels used in building façade systems in the construction industry. The objective is to create insulating panels with low combustibility that have the potential to sway the market away from conventional insulation types. In addition, at the end of the panel’s life, products that are completely recyclable will be delivered by utilizing waste industrial by-products as raw materials. As a result, the new insulation materials will have less embedded carbon than organic insulation materials derived from fossil fuels, increase the sustainability of steel panel systems, and ensure that panel waste will not be dumped after a building is deconstructed.
The new insulation material is anticipated to be primarily composed of inorganic industrial waste by-products, with each particle held together by an organic network that also bonds reversibly to the panel’s metal skin. High level imaging and examination offices, creating substance, primary, warm and fire execution data, will be used to help the turn of events. As a result, this exciting project will use novel chemistry to make a new insulation material that will make high-performance steel sandwich panel products more sustainable in the long run.
